1.3 Transferring your domain

  1. Your registrar (the company where you registered your domain name) needs to have the correct name servers for your domain. This allows HTTP requests (from visitors to your website) to be directed to the correct network.

    Our name servers are:

    ns1.nametoip.net 66.119.216.2
    ns2.nametoip.net 65.39.221.12

  2. We need to have a zone file for your domain. Unless you have your DNS hosted elsewhere, you must log into the client DNS interface and add the domains to our nameservers. Please consult the documents here for instructions.

  3. It takes time for these changes to be processed, and for the new DNS information to be picked up across the internet.
It can take up to 72 hours for your registrar to change the name server information for your domain. Until this happens, visitors to your website will be directed to the name servers of your domains previous hosting provider.
Another "catch" in the process happens early, with your internet service providers DNS servers. If your ISP is caching the DNS information for your domain, you will see the old information for your domain until your ISP refreshes their DNS cache. Most ISPs will refresh their DNS cache once every 24 hours. If necessary, you can contact your ISP and ask them to refresh their DNS information.

Remember that even if your domain name is not resolving correctly, you can still connect to your server by IP address. To do this, simply use your IP address just as you would use your domain name. For example, you can put http://your.ip.address into your browser and see your website (Note: This only works for your main domain). You can also FTP and SSH to your server, using your IP address in place of your domain name.
